CLERMONT, Fla. – The West Liberty University softball team came from behind to pull out a 6-5 extra-inning victory against Lees-McRae (N.C.) in the third game of a busy Thursday for Coach Jim Bacca's squad.
The Hilltoppers were coming off an impressive 7-2 win against Ohio Dominican in the afternoon after coming up short against Nyack (N.Y.) by a 6-3 count in the morning.
Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh against Lees-McRae, Sydney Bennington got things started for the Hilltoppers (4-11) with an RBI single and Nicki Mihalik came through with a two-run double to send the game into extra innings.
After Savanna Sieger retired the North Carolina squad in order in the top of the eighth, Damia Mogielski stole third with one in the bottom of the frame and jogged home with the game-winning run on an infield error.
Sieger got the win with 5.1 innings of two-hit relief. Mogielski and Mihalik each had a double and a single while Johnson and Bennington each singled and drove in a run.
Sieger had a huge game against Ohio Dominican, scattering six singles while striking out four and walking just two for the complete-game win in the circle while driving in two runs with a double and a home run.
Mihalik had another multi-hit game with a triple and a single while Mogielski added a double, single and RBI and Johnson tripled and drove in a pair of runs.
In the morning game, Nyack broke up a 3-3 deadlock with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and West Liberty couldn't recover.
Johnson smacked out a double and a single while Kylee Ensign had a pair of base knocks. Taylor Zeiger gave WLU an early lead with a two-run single.
The Hilltoppers have another three games on tap for Friday, starting with a 9 a.m. rematch with Lees-McRae.
