Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The West Liberty University softball team dropped a pair of early-season games here on Saturday, falling to unbeaten West Chester, 11-2, in the morning before coming up short against Shippensburg, 9-5, in an afternoon test.
In the opener, West Chester (4-0) broke open a close game with 5 runs in the bottom of the third and 5 more in the bottom of the fourth to invoke the 8-run mercy rule.
Savanna Sieger ripped a 2-run home run to put the Hilltoppers (0-4) on the board in the top of the fourth. Nicki Mihalik doubled in a losing cause. In the second game, the Raiders (3-2) scored three runs in the bottom of the second to overcome an early 3-2 Hilltopper lead and tacked on 2-run innings in the fourth and fifth frames to foil West Liberty's comeback attempt.
West Liberty will be back in action next month when the Hilltoppers head to Florida for spring break. The Black and Gold open their trip on March 6 with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale.
