Turnovers Costly as West Liberty Women Fall

Women's Basketball | 11/28/2016 8:58:00 PM

Box Score EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro University women's basketball team used a 17-2 run to break open a close game midway through the first half here Monday night and West Liberty never recovered as the Fighting Scots raced off to an 87-52 win at McComb Fieldhouse.
Turnovers were the problem for Coach Lynn Ullom's youthful Hilltoppers (1-5) as the hosts' high-pressure defense forced 30 West Liberty turnovers, allowing Edinboro (4-2) to pile up a whopping 35-2 edge in points off turnovers and pick up their fourth straight win.
The Hilltoppers trailed just 20-17 after Marissa Brown muscled inside for a layup with 47 seconds left in the opening quarter but the Fighting Scots' Ciara Rosten answered at the other, giving the hosts a 22-17 lead at the quarter break.
West Liberty turned the ball over on its first two possessions of the second quarter and Edinboro's Katie Fischer took advantage with back-to-back 3-pointers for a 28-17 lead. The margin never dropped below double-digits the rest of the way.
Another Rosten post move with 6:32 left in the half capped the 17-2 surge and the Fighting Scots went on to lead by as many as 23 points before settling for a 46-27 lead at the break. Edinboro opened the second half on a 7-0 run and led by as many as 39 points down the stretch.
It was a perfect storm of frustration for the Black and Gold as their turnover problems were exacerbated by a tough shooting night. While West Liberty shot a respectable 40 percent (20-of-50) from the floor for the game, the Hilltoppers were just 2-for-21 from behind the 3-point arc.
Brown was WLU's only double-figure scorer with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Freshman guard Grace Fodor finished with 4 points while grabbing 10 rebounds and handing out 5 assists – both game-highs.
Fischer hit 6 3-pointers and led all scorers with 24 points. Rosten and Michaela Barnes added 18 points each.
The Lady Hilltoppers will try to bounce back on Wednesday when they host Shepherd in a 5:30 p.m. game at the ASRC.
