WLU Volleyball Wins Tournament Thriller

Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team used a late rally to pull out a 3-2 win against Urbana on Thursday in a Mountain East Conference Tournament quarterfinal thriller at the McDonough Center on the campus of Wheeling Jesuit University.
With the win, Coach Kayla Mull's No. 5-seeded Hilltoppers (23-13) advance to Friday's 7:30 p.m. semifinal against the winner of Thursday's late quarterfinal between top-seeded and No. 5-ranked Wheeling Jesuit and No. 8 seed UVa-Wise.
West Liberty's quarterfinal match was a see-saw affair from the start with the Hilltoppers taking a 25-22 nod in the opening set only to see the No. 4-seeded Blue Knights (20-14) answer with a 25-19 win in the second set.
The Black and Gold regained the upper hand with a 25-20 win in the third set but saw Urbana battle all the way back from a 15-9 deficit in the fourth set to square the match with a 25-20 win.
The fifth set swung back and forth in the early going but Mull called a timeout after back-to-back points had given the Blue Knights an 11-9 edge.
With senior Amanda Garmenn serving, West Liberty reeled off three straight points to take a 12-11 lead and force a timeout by Urbana.
The Hilltoppers kept the heat on with Garmenn setting up a kill by Caitlin Clarke for a 13-11 WLU lead before splitting the Blue Knight backline with a service ace to set up match point with a 14-11 lead.
West Liberty wrapped things up in style with Garmenn feeding Amanda Leonard for the kill that ended the match and sent the Hilltoppers into the semifinal round.
Amanda Leonard just missed a triple-double with 9 kills, 16 assists and 10 digs. Raimey Benson had 10 kills, 3 aces and a pair of blocks while Clarke had a double-double of 10 kills and 11 digs to go along with 2 aces and a block. Stephanie Leonard added 8 kills and a match-high 9 blocks while Olivia Baumhoer weighed in with 6 kills and 4 blocks.
Garmenn had 22 assists to lead the Hilltoppers in that category while Kailee Cunningham had a team-high 19 digs.
