WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team combined a pair of strong pitching performances with some timely hitting Saturday afternoon to sweep a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from Glenville State.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (10-22, 2-10) handled the Pioneers (7-19, 3-9) by scores of 3-1 and 4-1 at the WLU Softball Complex.
An opportunistic Hilltopper squad made the most of four singles and some Glenville State miscues to take the opener. After pushing across an unearned run in the bottom of the first, WLU won it by scratching out a pair of runs in the fifth.
With one out and runners on second and third, winning pitcher Savanna Seiger slapped a ground to third and Allyson Johnson beat the throw to the plate for the go-ahead run. With Nicole Chris at bat, pinch-runner Kaitlyn Higginbotham scampered home on a passed ball to conclude the scoring.
After Glenville tied the game in the top of the second with a pair of extra-base hits, Seiger took charge in the circle. The freshman hurler blanked the Pioneers the rest of the way on just two singles, striking out 12 and walking three.
West Liberty got the bats going early in the nightcap, scoring twice in the bottom of the first and adding another tally in the second to provide more than enough offensive support for Paige Creamer. The Hilltopper hurler went the distance, scattering eight hits while giving up only one run. She struck out five and walked four.
Charley Troggio had a pair of singles for the winners while Nicki Mihalik and Taylor Zeiger each had a single and an RBI. Kalyn Hanby and Julie Tenney doubled.
The West Liberty women will host WVU Tech on Tuesday in a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
