FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team was victimized by some late-inning lightning in dropping a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Fairmont State on Saturday.
The host Falcons (23-12, 13-11) prevailed against the hard-luck Hilltoppers (16-30, 6-18) by scores of 10-4 and 6-2 on a cold, windy day at Duvall-Rosier Field.
Fairmont broke open a close game in the opener by pushing five runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth.
It was a similar story in the finale as West Liberty and Fairmont were locked in a 2-2 tie until the Falcons' Addie Fullen snapped the deadlock with a grand slam.
The Hilltoppers make the trek to the Eastern Panhandle on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Shepherd.
