Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team split a Mountain East Conference doubleheader with Concord Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (16-26, 6-14) handed the Mountain Lions (27-13, 15-5) a 2-1 setback in the first game but Concord picked up a 6-3 win in the finale to salvage the split. In the opener, West Liberty scratched out single tallies in the first and third frames and Savanna Sieger made them stand up with a gritty performance in the circle. Concord had at least one hit in every inning but Sieger weathered the storm, scattering eight singles, striking out five and walking just one while her teammates played errorless ball behind her.
Julie Tenney doubled and singled for the Hilltoppers while Nicki Mihalik singled home what proved to be the game-winning run in the bottom of the third. In the second game, the Mountain Lions broke up a scoreless tie with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth and added four more runs in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead.
West Liberty didn't go quietly, picking up a run in the sixth and scoring twice more in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little, too late.
The Hilltoppers pounded out 10 hits with Kalyn Hanby – WLU's lone senior – going 4-for-4 with four singles. Mihalik added a double and single, Tenney singled home a run and Allyson Johnson had a double. West Liberty returns to action on Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader at Wheeling Jesuit.
