Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Liberty split a Mountain East Conference softball doubleheader with UVA-Wise Friday afternoon at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (15-25, 5-13) won the opener by a 3-2 count only to see the Cavaliers (7-18, 7-13) come back to post a 4-0 win in the finale. Kelsi Johnson's one-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh snapped a 2-2 tie and gave West Liberty the walk-off win in the first game. Savanna Sieger went the distance in the circle for the win, striking out 14 and giving up six hits. She also helped her own cause at the plate with two singles and an RBI. UVA-Wise opened the second game with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first and that was all the support Cavalier pitcher Sarah Beamer needed as she fanned 10 West Liberty batters in spinning a three-hit shutout.
Hilltopper hurler Paige Creamer probably deserved a better fate as she struck out 9 batters without issuing a walk and allowed only one earned run - a solo homer by Emily Kale in the top of the sixth. Mihalik doubled for WLU's lone extra-base hit. West Liberty will observe Senior Day on Saturday when the Black and Gold host Concord in a 1 p.m. twinbill.
