Box Score 1
INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at West Virginia State on Sunday, falling by scores of 7-3 and 1-0.
In the opener, West Liberty (8-22, 0-10) grabbed an early 2-0 lead on Allyson Johnson's 2-run homer in the top of the first. State (12-9, 5-5) got an unearned run in the bottom of the frame and went ahead to stay with 4 runs in the bottom of the second.
Nicki Mihalick cracked a solo homer for the Hilltoppers in the top of the seventh but it was too little, too late.
The second game was a classic pitcher's duel between WLU's Savanna Seiger and the Yellowjackets' Chelsey Parkins. The only run was provided by State's Sydney Kaplan when she led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run.
Parkins didn't let a Hilltopper past second base, striking out 4 and walking 3 while giving up only two singles.
The West Liberty women will step outside of MEC play on Wednesday when they host Ohio Valley in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at the WLU Softball Complex.
