Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team never got the bats warmed up on Tuesday as Wheeling Jesuit posted a pair of shutout wins by scores of 3-0 and 4-0 after an overnight snow melted away at the WLU Softball Complex.
In the opener, Jesuit scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth frame to back a 3-hit shutout by Mallory Chapman.
The Hilltoppers had a golden opportunity in the bottom of the second when Nicki Mihalik doubled and Angela Johnson reached on an error, putting runners at first and third with nobody out. A double play and a strikeout kept the hosts off the board and Chapman settled in, facing only one batter over the minimum the rest of way.
In the second game, the Cardinals scored all four runs in the top of the first and the Hilltoppers couldn't dig themselves out of the hole as they were held to just 5 hits.
West Liberty did have a couple of good scoring chances but failed to capitalize.
Kaitlyn Higginbotham laced a one-out triple in the bottom of the first only to see a popup and strikeout end the threat. The Hilltoppers got runners to second and third with two out in the fifth but an infield grounder ended the innings.
West Liberty hits the road on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at the University of Charleston.
