The regionally-ranked West Liberty University men's tennis team split a pair of weekend matches with two other regionally-ranked squads in a weekend trip to Northwest Pennsylvania.
    Coach Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers, No. 4 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Atlantic Region rankings, knocked off No. 3-ranked Edinboro, 5-4, before dropping a 7-2 decision to No. 5-ranked Mercyhurst.
    In the Edinboro match, Martin Moncayo and Baptiste Perrin pulled out a tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles to give WLU a 2-1 edge heading into singles play. That proved to be the difference as West Liberty and Edinboro split the six singles matches, preserving the Hilltoppers' 5-4 margin of victory.
    Andrew Ponder and Santiago Gutierrez picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, while Moncayo claimed a three-set win at No. 4 singles.
    Against Mercyhurst, West Liberty dropped two of the three doubles matches and couldn't get anything going in singles play as the Lakers pulled away.
    Moncayo and Perrin once again pulled out a tiebreaker win at No. 2 doubles but Perrin's straight-set win at No. 3 singles was the Hilltoppers' only other win of the match.
    West Liberty return to action on March 6 with a 1 p.m. road match against perennial Atlantic Region power Bluefield State.
