Box Score URBANA, Ohio – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team got off to a strong start but couldn't hang on here Tuesday night as host Urbana rallied to a 3-1 revenge win in Mountain East Conference action at the Grimes Center.
Coach Kayla Fetsko-Mull's Hilltoppers (14-16, 7-7) had coasted to a 3-1
win against the Blue Knights (11-16, 5-9) in September and seemed on their way to sweeping the season series after outlasting Urbana, 29-27, in a marathon opening set.
The hosts rallied from an 18-10 deficit to pull out a narrow 25-23 victory in the second set and built on that momentum to close out the match with 25-20 and 25-15 wins in the next two sets.
Michaela Hawkins led 10 kills and 4 blocks to pace the Black and Gold while
Raimey Benson chipped in with 9 kills.
Stephanie Leonard added 8 kills and 14 digs with
Sydney Scherer also knocking down 8 kills.
Amanda Leonard and
Miranda Garmenn each posted double-doubles in a losing cause. Leonard had 24 assists and 10 digs while Garmenn added 14 assists and 10 digs.
Alexis Boyd had 6 kills and 10 digs while
Courtney Pyeritz had a team-high 18 digs.
West Liberty closes out the regular season at home this weekend, hosting Charleston on Friday in a 7 p.m. match before taking on West Virginia State at 11 a.m. Saturday.
