Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Shepherd pounded out 38 hits Sunday afternoon to slug its way to a sweep of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at West Liberty.
The host Hilltoppers (10-39, 3-25) hammered out 20 hits of their own but it wasn't enough to avoid closing out the season with losses by scores of 22-3 and 14-8.
The Rams (21-17, 10-18) raced out to a 10-3 lead after the first three innings of the opener and then wrapped things up with a marathon 12-run uprising in the top of the fourth. Allyson Johnson homered for West Liberty while Stacy Sumner doubled and drove in a run and Jenn Young added an RBI single. The Hilltoppers appeared on their way to salvaging a split in the second game when they scored two runs in the bottom of the first and tacked on four more in the third frame – highlighted by a three-run Johnson circuit blast – to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
That lead proved short-lived when the Shepherd bats once more swung into gear. A two-run fourth inning got the Rams on the board and they went ahead to stay with eight runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. West Liberty added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth but it was too little, too late.
