Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University softball team swept a Mountain East Conference doubleheader from Ohio County rival Wheeling Jesuit Tuesday afternoon at the WJU Softball Complex.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (10-35, 3-21) prevailed by scores of 4-0 and 7-5. Maggie Starr's two-out, two-run triple snapped a 5-5 tie and capped a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth as West Liberty finished off the sweep in the second game. The Hilltoppers overcame an early 5-2 WJU lead with Nikki Mihalik blanking the Cardinals (14-27, 7-15) on one hit over the final four innings to get the win.
Starr paced the WLU attack with two singles to go along with her clutch three-bagger while Julianne Wanda added a pair of hits and drove in a run. Jenn Young and Emily Harvey each had a double and an RBI while Kalyn Hanby and Jamee Burke added RBI singles. In the opener, Paula Creamer scattered five singles and recorded 13 ground-ball outs in a complete-game gem. Starr had a pair of hits for West Liberty while Alyssa Johnson and Jamie Burke each had a double and an RBI.
The Hilltoppers will host Fairmont State on Saturday in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
