SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The West Liberty University softball team dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader at Notre Dame Sunday afternoon, falling by scores of 10-3 and 10-2.
The host Falcons (17-20, 9-7) jumped on Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (8-31, 1-17) early in the opener, plating five runs in the bottom of the first and the visitors – who outhit Notre Dame by a 10-8 margin – couldn't put enough hits together to battle their way back into the contest. Alyssa Johnson had a huge game for West Liberty, blasting out two home runs and a single, while Julianne Wanda chipped in with a double, single and RBI. A fast start paid off for Notre Dame in the finale, as well, with the hosts scoring twice in the bottom of the first before breaking the game open with six more tallies in the second inning.
Jenn Young and Nikki Mihalik each doubled in a losing cause for the Hilltoppers while Wanda and Kylee Ensign delivered run-scoring singles. West Liberty will host Mount Aloysius Monday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader at the WLU Softball Complex.
