URBANA, Ohio – The West Liberty University softball team snapped a 21-game losing streak here Saturdayafternoon, shocking third-place Urbana, 6-3, in the first game of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader on the Blue Knights' diamond.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (8-29, 1-15) nearly pulled off a sweep of the Blue Knights (19-11, 11-5), who needed three fifth-inning runs to snap a 2-2 tie and pull out a 5-3 nod in the second game of the twinbill. In the opener, West Liberty got a two-run double from Emily Harvey as part of a three-run uprising in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. Urbana bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to knot the score but Maggie Starr's two-out, two-run single capped another three-run inning for the Hilltoppers in the top of the sixth and the Black and Gold held on for the win. Jenn Young went the distance in the circle to earn the win, surrendering just two earned runs on seven hits. Allyson Johnson had a double and a single to lead an 11-hit barrage for West Liberty. Starr, Young, Julianne Wanda and Kylee Ensign also had multi-hit games for the winners. In the second game, the Hilltoppers jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the top of the second but Urbana tied it with a pair of third-inning runs before going ahead to stay in the bottom of the fifth.
Taylor Zeiger had two singles and an RBI for WLU while Johnson had another double and chased home a run and Jamee Burke added an RBI single. West Liberty heads north to South Euclid, Ohio on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Notre Dame (Ohio).
