Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Notre Dame (Ohio) took both ends of a Mountain East Conference softball twinbill at West Liberty Saturday afternoon by scores of 12-4 and 11-7.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (7-14, 0-4) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning of the opener but the Falcons (8-11, 2-0) came back with 3 runs in the top of the second and went on to pound out a dozen hits – seven going for extra bases – in claiming their first league win of the year.
Julianne Wanda had two singles and a pair of RBIs for West Liberty and Maggie Starr chipped in with a double and single. Kalyn Hanby doubled and drove in a run while Jenn Young had an RBI single.
The Hilltoppers carried a 3-2 lead into the fourth inning of the second game before the Notre Dame bats went to work. The Falcons scored 4 runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-3 lead. West Liberty bounced back with 3 runs in the bottom of the frame to tie it but the visitors put the game out of reach with a five-spot in the fifth.
The hosts had a dozen hits in a losing cause. Starr was virtually unstoppable with a triple, double and two singles while Young drove in two runs with a single and a pair of two-baggers. Hanby had two more hits and drove in two runs, Allyson Johnson chimed in with two singles and Stacy Sumner added an RBI single.
The Lady Hilltoppers will try to get back on track Tuesday when they host Mount Aloysius (Pa.) in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
