Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University softball team dropped both ends of a Mountain East Conference doubleheader on Friday, falling to Urbana by scores of 8-2 and 12-4 at a cold and blustery WLU Softball Complex.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (7-12, 0-2) swung the bats well, pounding out 19 hits on the afternoon but the visiting Blue Knights (10-4, 2-0) took advantage of 17 West Liberty walks and 8 West Liberty errors to come out on top in the mutual MEC lid-lifter.
In the opener, Urbana broke up a close game with 6 runs in the top of the sixth. The visitors had just five hits but benefitted from a dozen walks. Maggie Starr and Julianne Wanda each had two hits for the Hilltoppers while Nikki Mihalik added a double but WLU's only runs came on Stacy Sumner's 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
In the second game, the Hilltoppers grabbed an early advantage with a single tally in the bottom of the second but a lethal combination of errors and walks led to an 8-run uprising and an insurmountable 8-1 lead for the Ohio squad in the top of the third.
Sumner came up big again for the hosts, homering for the second straight game and adding a double and single. Emily Harvey added a double and single while Starr singled and drove home a pair of runs. Kylee Ensign chipped in with an RBI base knock.
West Liberty will be back in action on Saturday, hosting a 2 p.m. MEC doubleheader against Notre Dame (OH).
