Box Score INSTITUTE, W.Va. –
Seger Bonifant topped the 30-point mark for the third time this month as the unbeaten and No. 1-ranked West Liberty University men's basketball team rolled to a 113-73 victory
Monday night at West Virginia State.
Coach
Jim Crutchfield's high-powered Hilltoppers (5-0, 2-0) struggled to find the range in the early minutes and didn't take their first lead until Bonifant drained the first of his seven 3-point bombs for an 11-8 West Liberty edge at
15:20 of the opening half.
State (0-3, 0-1) cut the lead to 11-10 on a Corey Gregg basket but that's when the Hilltoppers opened the floodgates.
Indiana Faithfull sailed coast-to-coast for a fast-break layup and Bonifant buried back-to-back bonus bombs to spark a 15-2 WLU run that put the visitors up, 26-12, just before the 10-minute mark.
Gregg tried to stop the bleeding with a power move to the hoop at 9:42 but when Bonifant came right back with a slick spin move in the paint and another 3-pointer, the Hilltoppers were off to the races again.
Bonifant buried his fifth 3-pointer of the half to cap a 19-1 sprint that gave West Liberty an insurmountable 45-15 lead with 6:04 still to play in the opening half.
The Hilltoppers coasted to a 59-30 lead at intermission – with Bonifant accounting for 26 of those points – and led by as many as 42 points down the stretch in the second half.
Bonifant led all scorers with 31 points despite sitting out almost the entire second half.
Zac Grossenbacher came off the bench with 22 points and 9 rebounds while Faithfull added 19 points and a game-high 7 assists.
Dimitrios Jelen-Joy had 13 points for the hosts while Devin Delaney added 10 more.
The Hilltoppers will be idle over the Thanksgiving weekend and won't return to action until hosting Notre Dame (Ohio) on Dec. 4 in a 7:30 p.m. game at the ASRC.
