Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Shepherd Friday night in a five-set marathon that took nearly two hours to complete at the ASRC.
After Coach Kayla Fetsko's Hilltoppers (5-11, 3-2) lost the first set by a 25-22 count, they rebounded to take the next two sets by identical 25-23 counts only to see the Rams (12-4, 5-1) stay alive with a convincing 25-10 win to force a deciding fifth set. West Liberty jumped out to a quick lead in the final set and was only four points away from closing out the win with an 11-8 lead but it wasn't to be as Shepherd finished with a flourish, winning seven of the last eight points to take the match with a 15-12 victory.
Sydney Scherer had 11 kills, 6 blocks and 3 aces for the Hilltoppers. Megan Lawless also had a huge game with 11 kills, 20 assists, 12 digs and 3 kills. Michaela Hawkins chipped in with 10 kills and 5 blocks while Chelsea Byrge had a double-double with 29 assists and 17 digs to go along with a match-high 4 aces. Courtney Pyeritz led all players with 37 digs. The Lady Hilltoppers will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they host Fairmont State in a 1 p.m. match at the ASRC.
