WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's volleyball team dropped its Mountain East Conference opener here Tuesday afternoon, falling by a 3-0 count at two-time defending NCAA Division II Atlantic Region champion Wheeling Jesuit.
The host Cardinals (11-3, 1-0), who came into the year ranked No. 18 in the AVCA Preseason Coaches' Top 25, ended a three-match winning streak for the Hilltoppers (5-7, 0-1) by scores of 25-7, 25-14 and 25-8.
Rachel Bertie led West Liberty with 6 kills while Peyton Miller added 5 kills and a pair of blocks. Chelsea Byrge chipped in with 10 assists and Courtney Pyeritz had a dozen digs.
The Hilltoppers head south this weekend for a 7 p.m. Friday match at Charleston followed by a 10 a.m. Saturday match at West Virginia State.
