WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team split a West Virginia Conference doubleheader with West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach
Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (13-29, 6-14) handed the Bobcats (24-18, 11-9) a 4-2 loss in the opener with Wesleyan bouncing back for a 12-0 win in the finale.
Rebekah Honce's two-run home run in the top of the second gave Wesleyan an early 2-0 lead in the first game but West Liberty ace
Sara Emerich slammed the door the rest of the way, scattering four singles and not allowing a Bobcat past second base over the final five frames.
The Hilltoppers answered with a single tally in the bottom of the second and took a 3-2 lead with two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Stacy Sumner closed out the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
The second game was all Wesleyan as the visitors batted around in the top of the first to jump out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back. Emerich had West Liberty's only extra-base hit, a double in the bottom of the fifth.
The Hilltoppers host Glenville State on Tuesday in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
