WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team celebrated Senior Day with a sweep of Davis & Elkins in a West Virginia Conference doubleheader at the WLU Softball Complex on Saturday.
Coach Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (12-28, 5-13) downed the Senators (14-19, 5-11) by scores of 3-1 and 7-3.
West Liberty used a little late-inning lightning to win the first game in walk-off fashion.
Jenn Young's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth pulled the Hilltoppers into a 1-1 tie that carried into the bottom of the seventh.
Stacy Sumner opened the WLU half of the seventh with a single and wound up jogging home when Young followed with her second home run of the game, a blast that cleared the fence in right-centerfield.
Sara Emerich, one of three Hilltopper seniors, got the win with a complete game effort in the circle while helping her own cause with a pair of singles. Sumner also had two hits for the hosts while Leanna McMillen added a double.
Felicia Hulslander and Janea Cockrell joined Emerich as West Liberty's senior honorees.
No late inning heroics were required in the second game as the Hilltoppers took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third and added three more tallies in the fourth inning to win going away.
Kalyn Hanby paced an 11-hit attack with a triple and a single while Taylor Zeiger chased home two runs with a pair of singles. Irene Fadul also had two hits while Hulslander and Maggie Starr weighed in with RBI singles.
West Liberty returns to action on Sunday when it hosts West Virginia Wesleyan in a 1 p.m. twinbill.
