Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The West Liberty University women's softball team suffered a pair of losses on Tuesday as play continued in the National Training Center Complex Spring Break Tournament.
Coach
Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (4-9) couldn't get anything going in a 10-2 setback against UNC-Pembroke and fumbled away a late lead in a 3-2 extra-inning loss to defending Midwest Regional champion St. Joseph's (Ind.)
Leanna McMillen gave the Hilltoppers a 2-1 lead in the third inning of their thriller against St. Joseph's when she jacked a 2-run home run out of the yard and the Black and Gold nearly made that one-run lead stand up.
The veteran Pumas (2-0), making their season debut after earning a berth in last year's NCAA Division II World Series, scratched out an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to force the game into extra innings and won it in the bottom of the eighth with another unearned tally.
Maggie Starr backed McMillen at the plate with three singles for West Liberty.
After waiting out a 2-hour rain delay against UNC-Pembroke, West Liberty trailed just 3-2 heading into the top of the fifth but the Braves (14-17) scored twice in that frame to take the lead for good and put the game on ice with 5 more runs in the sixth.
McMillen had two singles for WLU while Kayln Hanby doubled and Jenn Young chipped in with an RBI single.
The Hilltoppers close out the NTC Complex tourney on Wednesday with morning games against Bridgeport (Conn.) and Bemidji State (Minn.).
