Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. – The West Liberty University women's softball team split a pair of games here on Monday as the Hilltoppers continued their spring break play in the NTC Complex Tournament.
West Liberty (4-7) bounced back from a tough 4-3 loss to Mercy (N.Y.) in the first game of the day by scoring three runs in the top of the eighth to pull out a 5-3 win against St. Michael's (Vt.).
In the first game, the Hilltoppers got the tying run in scoring position in each of the last three innings but couldn't come up with the equalizer in a frustrating one-run setback.
Stacy Sumner got West Liberty off to a flying start with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the first and
Felicia Hulslander tripled and scored in the bottom of the fourth but it wasn't enough to lift the Black and Gold into the victory column.
There was a happier ending to the second game as Jamie Burke and
Leanna McMillen wrapped RBI singles around a sacrifice fly by
Taylor Zeiger to fuel the Hilltoppers' game-winning 3-run rally in the top of the eighth.
Hulslander had 2 singles and drove in a run while
Maggie Starr also pounded out a pair of hits and Zeiger went for extra bases with a triple.
The NTC Complex Tournament continues on Tuesday with West Liberty taking on UNC-Pembroke and St. Joseph's (Ind.).
