Box Score 2 WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team continued its strong early season play on Friday with a pair of convincing wins at the Wheeling Jesuit University Invitational.
Coach
Kayla Fetsko's Hilltoppers (8-6) opened the tournament with a 3-0 spanking of Ohio Valley and followed that up with a 3-0 romp past Glenville State. Tournament results are not included in the West Virginia Conference standings.
West Liberty's 1-2 punch of
Rachel Zeigler and
Anne Edwards at the net was effective throughout the day.
In the opener against Ohio Valley (2-11), Zeigler hammered down 15 kills, blocked 2 shots and had a service ace while Edwards also hit double figures with 10 kills. Ali Kowalski had 7 kills, a block and tied for the team lead with 15 digs while
Chelsea Byrge stuffed the stat sheet with 5 kills, 2 aces, a block, 15 digs and 28 assists.
Zeigler and Edwards came up big against Glenville State (2-12), as well, with Zeigler posting a match-high 13 kills and adding 2 blocks while Edwards charted 12 kills, 3 aces and 4 blocks.
Michaela Hawkins weighed in with 8 kills and a block while Byrge added 4 kills, 5 blocks and a match-high 29 assists.
Gabbie Davis led the Hilltoppers with 14 digs.
West Liberty closes out the WJU Invitational Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. match against the host Cardinals, ranked No. 16 in the latest NCAA Division II coaches' poll.
