Felicia Hulslander's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh brought home
Maggie Starr with the only run of the game here Wednesday as the West Liberty softball team salvaged a split of a non-conference doubleheader at Point Park.
The host Pioneers (17-13) had pulled out a 3-1 win in the opener.
In the second game, Coach
Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (7-30) combined strong pitching with timely hitting to come away with the 1-0 decision.
Angela Johnson started in the circle and hurled five innings of two-hit shutout ball, striking out nine and walking just one, before handing things over to
Becky Fortuna. The Hilltopper reliever finished off the shutout to pick up the win.
After pounding out 11 hits in the opener, West Liberty had been held to just one hit through the first six innings of the finale before breaking through in the seventh.
Starr led off the frame with a ringing double and moved to third on a
Leanna McMillen single. Hulslander followed with the sacrifice fly that produced what proved to be the game-winning run.
Point Park scored all three of its runs in the first two innings of the first game and survived an 11-hit barrage from the Black and Gold to walk away with the win.
Hulslander, McMillen, Fortuna and
Alivia Swiney all had two hits each for the Hilltoppers in a losing cause.
West Liberty returns to WVIAC action on Friday when the Hilltoppers host Alderson-Broaddus in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the WLU Softball Complex.
