Box Score 2 WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –The West Liberty University softball team split a West Virginia Conference doubleheader with Concord on Friday, rolling to a 9-0 win in the opener before dropping a 7-2 decision in the finale at the WLU Softball Complex.
Coach
Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (13-38, 8-16) rode the strong right arm of
Sara Emerich to victory in the first game as the West Liberty junior carried a perfect game into the fourth inning before settling for a two-hit shutout.
Emerich's teammates provided plenty of support in a game that was shortened to five innings by the 8-run mercy rule. Eight of the nine Hilltopper batters had at least one hit and seven different West Liberty players drove in a run.
The second game was tied at 2-2 through four innings before the Mountain Lions (18-29, 7-16) broke through with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth to salvage the split.
McMillen had a double and single for West Liberty while Young drove in a run with a pair of singles and
Angela Johnson also had a two-hit game. Hulslander added an RBI single.
The Hilltoppers wrap up the season at home on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Bluefield State.
