Box Score 2 ELKINS, W.Va. –Timely hitting and solid pitching were the formula for success Saturday afternoon as the West Liberty University softball team swept a West Virginia Conference doubleheader at Davis & Elkins by scores of 6-2 and 9-3.
Sara Emerich led the way for Coach
Jim Bacca's Hilltoppers (10-35, 5-13) in the circle. She teamed with
Becky Fortuna on a three-hitter in the opener, picking up the win with 3.1 innings of hitless relief, before finishing off the sweep of the Senators (20-25, 6-12) with a complete-game win in the second game.
In the first game,
Leanna McMillen snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the top of the fifth and
Jennifer Young broke things open with a two-run, two-out double later in the frame. Young also tacked on an insurance tally with an RBI double in the top of the seventh.
Stacey Sumner had staked West Liberty to an early lead with a two-run single in the top of the first. McMillen and
Irene Fadul joined Young with multiple-hit games for the visitors.
The Hilltopper bats turned a close game into a runaway in the nightcap, as well, storming back from a 3-1 deficit with a three-run uprising in the top of the third and putting the game out of reach with four more runs in the top of the fourth.
Felicia Hulslander had a huge game, driving in six runs with a triple, double and single. McMillen added two more singles while Sumner homered and drove in three runs.
West Liberty swings right back into action on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at West Virginia Wesleyan.
