Box Score
ELKINS, W.Va. – A rash of turnovers proved too much for the West Liberty University women's basketball team to overcome here Monday as Davis & Elkins breezed to a 74-63 win in the McDonnell Center.
The Hilltoppers (9-8, 6-5) struggled from the start, committing 14 turnovers in the first half alone as the Senators (10-7, 9-4) opened up a 30-18 lead at intermission.
West Liberty opened the second half with 6 straight points – 5 from Jenn Cessna – to cut the deficit in half at 30-24 but the Black-and-Gold couldn't maintain the momentum.
Rachel Gostomski stemmed the bleeding for D&E with a rainbow 3-pointer, igniting an extended surge that put the game on ice.
Davis & Elkins ultimately opened up its largest lead of the night, 52-33, with 12 minutes remaining and the Hilltoppers – plagued by turnovers in the second half as well – couldn't get over that sizable hump.
Cessna, a senior guard, led West Liberty with a career-high 19 points – 17 of them coming in the second half – but was the only Hilltopper in double figures. Emily Blevins and Hillary Southworth finished with 8 points each, snapping Southworth's run of scoring double figures in every game this season, while Bri Kamarec and Shanae Ash added 7 points each off the bench.
Gostomski led all scorers for the Senators with 23 points while Page Turner and Jorden Lykes joined her in double figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
West Liberty shot a respectable 43 percent (20-of-47) from the floor but was just 4-of-15 (26 percent) from behind the 3-point arc and finished with 20 turnovers.
Davis & Elkins shot 44 percent (24-of-55) from the floor but fared much better from 3-point range, hitting 7-of-21 (33 percent) and was charted with just 11 turnovers.
The Hilltoppers will try to get back on track Thursday night when they travel to Bluefield State for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
