FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The West Liberty women's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday as the Falcon Fest Tournament concluded at Fairmont State.
Coach Brooke Turner's Hilltoppers rolled to a straight-set win against Felician (N.J.) by scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-14 in a morning match before dropping a hard-fought decision to Mercyhurst (Pa.) by scores of 25-13, 25-17, 13-25 and 28-26 in the afternoon session.
In the opener, Melissa Pierzchala led all players with 11 kills while Anne Edwards and Rachel Ziegler added 8 and 7, respectively. Chelsea Byrge chipped in with 12 assists and 13 digs while Gabbie Davis added 10 assists and Haylee Strause contributed a dozen digs.
Against Mercyhurst, Edwards led the Hilltoppers with 9 kills while Emily Mellie had 8 kills and 6 blocks. Melissa Pierzchala was charted with 7 kills and 17 digs while Byrge had 17 assists and Strause finished with 13 digs.
West Liberty returns home to host Ohio Valley University in a mutual West Virginia Conference opener Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the ASRC.
