VIENNA, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's softball team closed out the season on a high note here Monday night, winning a pair of extra-inning thrillers in a doubleheader sweep of Ohio Valley.
The Hilltoppers started the twinbill by taking a 7-6 decision in a 10-inning marathon and finished under the lights with a 7-3 victory in the nightcap by scoring four runs in the top of the ninth.
The opener was a wild affair which saw each team score one run in the 8th and two runs in the 9th before West Liberty won it on Courtney Loe's RBI single in the top of the 10th.
Loe led the Hilltoppers (11-36, 6-18) with two singles and two RBIs while Stacy Sumner hammered a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the 9th. Angela Johnson had a double and an RBI while Maggie Starr and Jamee Burke each singled and drove in a run.
The second game also had its share of thrills and spills as the score was tied at 2-2 heading into extra innings.
West Liberty took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 8th when Kelsey Martin legged out a two-out bunt single as Felicia Hulslander sprinted home from third but the Fighting Scots (7-28, 4-14) stayed alive with an RBI single in the bottom of the frame.
The Hilltoppers put the game away with four unearned runs in the top of the 9th. Loe highlighted the winning rally with a two-run single.
Loe had two singles and two RBIs for the second straight game while Hulslander had a double and a single.
