WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – No. 19 West Virginia Wesleyan pushed across a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh here Saturday to snap a 3-3 tie and complete a doubleheader sweep of West Liberty University with a 5-3 win at the WLU Softball Complex.
The West Virginia Conference-leading Bobcats (42-5, 21-1) had coasted to a 15-4 win in Saturday's opener.
The host Hilltoppers (9-36, 4-18) dug themselves too deep a hole in the first game as Wesleyan took advantage of six West Liberty errors to plate eight unearned runs and was able to close out the game in six innings.
West Liberty grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the second game when Starr scored on a passed ball and Wanda followed with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.
The Bobcats battled back to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth but the Hilltoppers knotted the score in the bottom of the frame on Martin's run-scoring single.
An infield error opened the door for Wesleyan in the top of the seventh and the Bobcats made West Liberty pay with a two-out, two-run single by Elizabeth Derrick to snap the 3-3 tie.
The Hilltoppers actually out-hit Wesleyan, 10-8, in the nightcap. Wanda, Starr,
Katelyn Kumm and
Kelsie Cannaday each contributed a pair of singles for the hosts.
West Liberty is scheduled to close out the regular season on Monday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Ohio Valley University.
