BOX SCORE
GLENVILLE, W.Va. – Senior teammates and roommates
Jordan Fortney and
Barry Shetzer had record-setting nights as unbeaten and No. 1-ranked West Liberty blasted Glenville State, 124-85, at the Jesse R. Lilly Gymnasium on Saturday.
Fortney set a Hilltopper single-season record with his 105th 3-point field goal and became the fourth member of West Liberty's current senior class to join the 1,000-point club with a game-high 24 points.
Shetzer, who set the previous single-season record of 103 3-pointers last season, dropped in four bonus bombs on the night to become the leading 3-point shooter in Hilltopper history. His career total now stands at 263 – three more than the old record of 260, set by current WLU assistant Eric Bovaird from 1992-95.
West Liberty (26-0, 21-0) hit two 3-pointers in the opening minute and was never challenged in presenting head coach
Jim Crutchfield with a school-record 26th consecutive win.
The victory completed a sweep of the season series with Glenville State (4-19, 4-16). The Hilltoppers had eased to a 108-75 victory against the Pioneers early last month.
Saturday's game followed much the same script as West Liberty opened up a 21-point halftime lead and led by as many as 44 points down the stretch despite Crutchfield turning the starters into spectators midway through the second half.
The Hilltoppers' defensive pressure proved too much for the hosts to handle as West Liberty was charted with 24 steals to just 4 for Glenville. West Liberty also had a 29-7 edge in the turnover department and a 52-11 differential in points off turnovers.
All five WLU starters scored in double figures before heading to the sidelines.
Corey Pelle backed Fortney with 22 points and 10 assists – the 10th double-double of his career – while
Alex Falk added 14 points, Shetzer finished with 12 and
John Wolosinczuk added 11.
Chris Morrow came off the bench for 13 points to round out the double-figure scorers.
Justin Caldwell paced the Pioneers with 23 points while Nick Dent added 21 in a losing cause.
The Hilltoppers will try to close out the third unbeaten regular-season in school history on Saturday when they visit Davis & Elkins in the season finale. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. in Elkins.
Game Notes
X West Liberty's previous unbeaten seasons came in back-to-back campaigns during the formative stages of the program. Hall of Fame coach Harry Sweeney led the Hilltoppers to a 5-0 record in an abbreviated 1930-31 season and followed that up with a 13-0 mark in 1931-32.
X Saturday's game marked the 100th time West Liberty has scored 100 or more points during the Crutchfield era. The Hilltoppers are 92-8 in those games
X Fortney leads the nation in 3-point field goals per game and 3-point field goal percentage
X West Liberty, which has already clinched its second consecutive league championship, stretched its WVIAC winning streak to 39 games
X No player fouled out from either team even though a total of 47 fouls were whistled during the game
X Glenville State shot 68 percent (15-of-22) from the floor and 75 percent (3-of-4) from behind the 3-point arc in the first half but still
