WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team battled West Virginia Wesleyan to the wire in four nerve-wracking games Tuesday night before coming out on the short end of a 3-1 decision at the ASRC.
The visiting Bobcats (6-7, 2-0) pulled out narrow 26-24 and25-22 verdicts in the first two games but Coach Brooke Turner's Hilltoppers (8-7, 2-2) refused to fold in Game Three and extended the match with a gritty 28-26 win.
Game Four also turned into a marathon with neither team willing to yield until Wesleyan escaped with a 29-27 nod to close out the match.
Melissa Pierzchala charted her second straight double-double for West Liberty with 12 kills and a dozen digs. Rachel Ziegler led the hosts with 15 kills while Anne Edwards hammered down 13 kills. Abby McCreery had 28 assists while Jennifer Torrence led all players with 24 digs.
The Hilltoppers make the short trip down Route 88 Wednesday night to challenge preseason conference favorite Wheeling Jesuit. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the McDonough Center.
