SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The West Liberty volleyball team dropped both ends of a triangular meet at Shepherd on Saturday. The host Rams handed the Hilltoppers a 3-0 setback in a West Virginia Conference tilt while Point Park (Pa.) dealt West Liberty a 3-1 defeat.
Shepherd (6-10, 4-1), solidified its hold on second place in the WVIAC standings with a convincing 3-game sweep by scores of 25-14, 25-14 and 25-15. Melissa Pierzchala had five kills and 8 digs to lead the Hilltoppers.
The Pioneers (17-5), a perennial NAIA power from Pittsburgh, took control early with 25-19 and 25-12 wins in the first two games. West Liberty rebounded for a 25-22 verdict in the third game but Point Park closed out the match with a 25-15 win in game four.
Abby McCreery had a double-double for Coach Brooke Turner's Hilltoppers with 16 assists and 13 digs while Pierzchala had 7 kills and 11 digs. Rachel Ziegler had a team-high 8 kills while Anne Edwards added 7. April Salyer weighed in with 11 digs.
West Liberty travels to Johnstown, Pa. Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. match with Pitt-Johnstown.
