BATTLERS HOLD OFF HILLTOPPERS IN PHILIPPI

PHILIPPI, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team battled Alderson-Broaddus to the wire in a pair of tight games here Thursday night before dropping a 3-0 decision to the Battlers.

Coach Brooke Turner's Hilltoppers (10-15, 4-8) forced the first game into overtime before coming out on the short end of a 27-25 count. Alderson-Broaddus (17-13, 10-3), which collected its seventh win in the last eight matches, followed that up with a 25-14 win in Game Two but had to fight off a determined West Liberty squad once more in the third game before emerging with a 25-23 win to complete the sweep.

Melissa Pierzchala and Abby McCreery each charted double-doubles for the Hilltoppers. Pierzchala led all players with 10 kills and also had a match-high 11 digs. McCreery had 10 digs and 16 assists while Haylee Strause tied Pierzchala for match honors with 11 digs. Anne Edwards added 8 kills and 3 blocks in a losing cause.

West Liberty is idle this weekend but hosts Glenville State on Tuesday. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start at the ASRC.
