Shon Stephens made four interceptions in the Hilltoppers conference opening win over Alderson Broaddus on Thursday night. The four picks were a Mountain East Conference single game record and were the most by an NCAA D2 player since SW Minnesota State defensive back J.D. Jackson-Hanchett picked off 4 passes in a 51-35 victory at Minnesota State-Moorhead on Sept. 7, 2017.
The last two interceptions for Stephens came on back-to-back possessions as Alderson Broaddus was vying to tie the game. With 2:20 left in the game, he intercepted a game-tying pass in the endzone. Then, Stephens put the game in the books with a 52-yard pick-six putting WLU up 30-17 with 30 seconds to play.
Stephens also made three solo tackles and had three kick returns for a total of 86 yards, including a 48-yard return. He now has six interceptions on the season, just two games in, including a pick-six in each of the Hilltoppers wins.
