Simpson went 3-0 on Saturday at the NCAA Super Region 3 Championships to claim his first super region title and qualify for the national tournament in two weeks. He dominated the quarterfinal round with a 17-0 tech fall, then earned his championship bid with a 4-2 decision. In the title bout, Simpson and Austin Fietz, of Lake Erie, were scoreless in the final period, but Simpson was able to prevail with escape and ride time advantage points.
