WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team wrapped up a big weekend on Sunday with a 6-3 victory against preseason Mountain East Conference favorite West Virginia Wesleyan at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Sunday's victory was the third in as many days for Coach Sam McCullough's Hilltoppers (11-2, 3-0), who were coming off back-to-back 9-0 shutouts of Concord and Cedarville (Ohio). West Liberty took two of the three doubles matches to get off to a good start against the Bobcats, who received 5 of the 8 first-place votes in the MEC coaches' preseason poll. Andy Ponder and Santiago Gutierrez coasted to an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles while Baptiste Perrin and Martin Moncayo breezed to an 8-3 decision at No. 2 doubles. Wesleyan kept its hopes alive with wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles but the Hilltoppers got straight-set victories from Gutierrez, Perrin, Moncayo and Matt Tully to close out the match. West Liberty will host Fairmont State on Thursday in a 3 p.m. match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
