A legend in Ohio Valley coaching circles, Sean Doyle returns for his second season on the hilltop as a valuable member of Coach Danny Irwin’s staff with the fast-rising West Liberty University wrestling program.
Following a highly-successful high school coaching career, Doyle was hired as the founding coach of the Wheeling University wrestling program in 2013 and wasted no time embarking on an impressive 5-year run.
Doyle’s Cardinals quickly established themselves as a regional power, producing 10 NCAA Division II national tournament qualifiers, two NCAA Division II All-Americans and seven NWCA Scholar All-Americans. After putting together a solid 6-7 dual-meet record in his inaugural season, Doyle led Wheeling to a 32-16 dual-meet record in his last four years at the helm – including a runner-up finish at the 2017 NWCA National Duals.
Doyle wrestled on two Ivy League championship teams as a 3-year starter at Cornell University. He posted a career mark of 36-23 for Big Red head coach Rob Koll, highlighted by a fourth-place finish at 133 pounds in the 2000 EIWA Championships.
The 2001 Cornell graduate holds a degree in Applied Economics and Business Management with a concentration in Communications. He went on to earn his master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Wheeling.
After graduation, Doyle entered the coaching ranks at Wheeling Central Catholic High School. In two short years with the Maroon Knights, he led Central to a Top 15 ranking in the state and coached a pair of unbeaten individual state champions.
He moved up the hill to Wheeling Park High School in 2007 and established himself as one of the state's elite high school mat mentors. Doyle led WPHS to four Top 5 state tournament finishes – including two Class AAA runner-up finishes – and coached seven individual state champions. A 2-time OVAC Coach of the Year, Doyle was also honored as the 2008 West Virginia Wrestling Coach of the Year.
Doyle resides in Wheeling with his wife, Amber, and their children Jacoby, Lucy and Aidan.
