Mike Ricci

Head coach Mike Ricci and his West Liberty University men’s golf program have established themselves as perennial contenders at the conference and regional levels as the former Hilltopper standout enters his 12th season as head coach at his alma mater.
When the 3-time conference Coach of the Year led the Black and Gold to their sixth straight NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Tournament berth last spring, it marked the ninth NCAA Tournament bid in the past 11 seasons for the Black and Gold linksters.
A four-year letterman on the West Liberty golf team during his playing days, Ricci was a member of the 1971 Hilltopper team that won the WVIAC championship and qualified to compete in the NAIA national tournament at Rockford, Ill.
The 1975 West Liberty graduate went on to earn a master’s degree from West Virginia University before entering the high school classroom. He taught special education and coached football, basketball and track at Woodsdale Junior High School in Wheeling, W.Va. for many years before taking his teaching and coaching skills to Wheeling Park High School in 1992.
As the Patriots’ head golf coach, he led Wheeling Park to six Ohio Valley Athletic Conference championships, six West Virginia regional titles and the 2002 West Virginia state championship. His team also placed in the top three at the state tournament on three other occasions. Coach Ricci was inducted into the Wheeling Park High School Hall of Fame in February 2019.
