FROSTBURG, Md. — The West Liberty University men's soccer team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end Wednesday with a 3-0 loss to Frostburg State in a Mountain East Conference matchup at Bobcat Field.
The Hilltoppers, who entered the match 4-0 overall and 2-1 in MEC play, finished with 14 shots, including 10 after halftime, and put five attempts on goal. Frostburg State improved to 4-0-2 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play.
Frostburg State took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Lynghton Romage scored at 23:49. West Liberty answered with a pair of late first-half chances, but Frostburg goalkeeper Josiah Emerson turned aside a shot from
Leandre Tyssandier at 44:56 to preserve the one-goal advantage at halftime.
Leyton Collier recorded West Liberty's first shot on goal at 27:27, but Emerson made the save.
Noah Ward and
Julius Aschmann also recorded first-half shots as the Hilltoppers continued to look for the equalizer.
West Liberty weathered an early second-half surge from the Bobcats, with Frostburg State generating multiple shots and corner kicks between 47:33 and 59:16. The Hilltoppers then answered with attacking pressure of their own, getting shots from Aschmann, Collier and
Ethan Nethery.
Frostburg State doubled its lead when Frank Stare scored in the 65th minute.
After
Shai'ya Fitzgerald made a save in the 73rd minute, West Liberty produced its strongest offensive stretch of the match. The Hilltoppers recorded five shots and three corner kicks between 74:10 and 81:07, but could not convert the pressure into a goal.
Nethery,
Alec Aceves and Collier each put shots on goal during the sequence, with Emerson making saves on all three attempts. Frostburg State's Inzaghi Harmon scored at 78:31 to make it 3-0.
The Hilltoppers continued to press in the closing minutes, with E.J. Sablan adding a late shot, but Frostburg State held on for the shutout.
Collier led West Liberty with three shots, including two on goal, while Aschmann also recorded three shots. Fitzgerald played all 90 minutes in goal and made three saves.
West Liberty returns home Sunday to host Davis & Elkins in another MEC matchup at the West Family Athletic Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
