Hilltoppers Drop Doubleheader at Wheeling; Set for Senior Day Finale Sunday

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The West Liberty University baseball team came up short in a doubleheader against Wheeling on Friday evening at EQT Park, falling 14-0 in game one before dropping a hard-fought 8-7 decision in the nightcap.

The Hilltoppers move to 14-30 on the season and will wrap up the year Sunday at Kovalick Field.

Game One: Wheeling 14, West Liberty 0

Wheeling used a fast start and dominant pitching to take control early in the opener.

The Cardinals plated six runs in the first inning and added three more in the second to build a commanding 9-0 lead. Wheeling continued to add on throughout the game, finishing with 14 runs on 10 hits.

West Liberty was unable to generate offense, as the Hilltoppers were held hitless and limited to just two baserunners.

John Thompson took the loss on the mound, while Sebastian Khan earned the win for Wheeling after tossing 4.1 hitless innings.

Game Two: Wheeling 8, West Liberty 7 (8 inn.)

The Hilltoppers responded with a much stronger effort in game two, rallying multiple times before falling in extra innings.

Giacomo Dolce got West Liberty on the board early with a solo home run in the first inning. After Wheeling answered, the Hilltoppers surged ahead with a three-run third inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Hunter White and run-producing outs from Luke Foley and Luke Marsh.

West Liberty extended its lead to 7-4 in the fourth when Austin Wittreich launched a three-run home run to left-center.

Wheeling chipped away, scoring twice in the fifth and tying the game in the seventh. The Cardinals then pushed across the winning run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.

White led the Hilltoppers offensively with three hits and an RBI, while Wittreich added three hits and three RBIs. Dolce also finished with two hits and scored three runs.
