Hilltoppers Split Sunday Twinbill with Point Park, Earn Series Split

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team wrapped up its four-game Mountain East Conference weekend series with Point Park by splitting a Sunday doubleheader at Kovalick Field, bouncing back with a strong performance in the nightcap after dropping game one.

The split gives the Hilltoppers a 2-2 result for the weekend series, earning a key conference split against one of the North Division's top teams.

Game 1 – Point Park 10, West Liberty 1

Point Park jumped out early and never looked back in the opener, using a big fourth inning to pull away for a 10-1 victory.

The Pioneers capitalized on early miscues, plating a run in the first before adding three more in the second. A five-run fourth inning broke the game open, as Point Park strung together timely hits to extend the lead to 9-0.

West Liberty's lone run came in the fourth inning when Giacomo Dolce came around to score on a passed ball, but the Hilltoppers were limited to just one hit on the day.

Seth Cover took the loss on the mound, while Andrew Benchich provided relief out of the bullpen. Despite the setback, the Hilltoppers turned their focus quickly to the second game of the twinbill.

Game 2 – West Liberty 3, Point Park 1

West Liberty responded in a big way in game two, using timely hitting and a strong pitching performance from Mason Bille to secure a 3-1 victory.

The Hilltoppers struck first in the opening inning as Luke Foley drove in Lucas Marsh to give WLU an early 1-0 lead.

West Liberty added to its advantage in the fourth inning. Austin Wittreich delivered an RBI single to score Foley, and Garrett Comer followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Marsh and extend the lead to 3-0.

Point Park scratched across a run in the fifth, but Bille remained in control. The right-hander tossed a complete game, allowing just four hits and one run while keeping the Pioneer offense off balance throughout.

At the plate, Wittreich led the way with a pair of hits, while Foley and Comer each drove in runs to pace the offense.

West Liberty will look to build on the momentum from the series finale as the Hilltoppers hit the road for a four-game set at Salem beginning Wednesday.
