WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team honored its senior class Saturday afternoon at the Hilltopper Softball Complex, recognizing Ashlyn Tapman, Brooke Perri, Caroline Woody, Izzy McKee, Jaden Conrad, Madalyn Johnson, and Sara Simon for their contributions to the program before taking on Glenville State in a Mountain East Conference doubleheader.
The visiting Pioneers swept the twinbill, taking game one 10-2 and edging the Hilltoppers 2-1 in game two.
Game One – Glenville State 10, West Liberty 2
Glenville State used a fast start to take control early, scoring four runs in the first inning and adding six more in the second to build a 10-0 advantage.
West Liberty answered in the third inning as Jaden Conrad delivered an RBI single to get the Hilltoppers on the board, followed by an RBI double from Izzy McKee to cut into the deficit.
Conrad led the offense with two hits, while McKee and Caroline Woody each added hits in the loss.
Kadence Pettit took the loss in the circle, while Tapman provided relief work over the final four innings.
Game Two – Glenville State 2, West Liberty 1
The Hilltoppers responded with a strong effort in game two, keeping the Pioneers in check throughout a tightly contested matchup.
Glenville State broke through with a run in the fourth inning and added another in the sixth to take a 2-0 lead.
West Liberty continued to battle and broke through in the seventh as Paytyn Tucker came around to score on a Pioneer error, cutting the deficit to one and bringing the tying run to the plate.
Despite the late push, the Hilltoppers were unable to complete the comeback.
West Liberty finished with four hits in the game, with Tucker, Conrad, McKee, and Rylee Mangold each recording a hit.
Annaliese Davis turned in a strong outing in the circle, allowing just two runs on 11 hits over 5.2 innings, while Mangold added scoreless relief.
