Hilltoppers Drop Tight 4-3 Decision to Gordon in Hilton Head

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — The West Liberty University men's tennis team battled through several closely contested matches but came up just short Sunday morning, falling 4-3 to Gordon College during spring break play in Hilton Head.

The Hilltoppers (3-3) claimed three singles victories in the match but were unable to overcome Gordon after the Scots secured the doubles point and two key singles wins.

Doubles Play

Gordon took an early advantage by winning two of the three doubles matches.

At No. 2 doubles, West Liberty's Ethan Shepard and Pablo Zubieta earned the Hilltoppers' lone doubles victory, defeating Gabriel Guzman and Percy Martinez 6-4.

However, Gordon claimed the other two doubles matches to secure the early 1-0 lead. Jeffrey Bodner and Santiago Diaz defeated Barney Cowan and Austin Zgurski 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Jack Makiej and James Wellborn topped Chris Burns and Ignacio Giurfa 6-4 at No. 3.

Singles Competition

West Liberty responded well in singles play with three strong victories.

At No. 2 singles, Ignacio Giurfa delivered a straight-set win over Santiago Diaz, 6-3, 6-4, to even the match.

The Hilltoppers also picked up a hard-fought victory at No. 3 singles, where Ethan Shepard outlasted Gabriel Guzman in a three-set battle, 7-5, 3-6, 10-7.

Barney Cowan added another point for West Liberty with a comeback win at No. 4 singles, defeating Percy Martinez 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.

Gordon secured the match by taking the remaining singles contests, including a tightly contested three-set win at No. 5 singles and another tiebreak victory at No. 6 singles.

The Toppers return to action Wednesday against Lawrence Tech.
