Yellow Jackets Sweep Hilltoppers in Road Match

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision on the road to West Virginia State on Friday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets secured the early advantage by sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The duo of Pablo Zubieta and Ethan Shepherd battled in the top spot but fell 6-4, while Barney Cowan and Austin Zgurski dropped a 6-2 decision at No. 2 doubles. Chris Burns and Ignacio Giurfa rounded out doubles action with a 6-1 loss.

In singles play, West Virginia State continued its momentum, winning all six courts to complete the sweep.

Pablo Zubieta fell 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 position, while Ignacio Giurfa dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 2 singles. Ethan Shepherd put together one of the more competitive matches of the day at No. 3 singles, pushing the second set to a tiebreak before falling 6-3, 7-6.

Barney Cowan was defeated 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, and Austin Zgurski dropped a 6-1, 6-1 decision in the No. 5 spot. Chris Burns closed out the lineup at No. 6 singles, falling 7-5, 6-0 after a tightly contested opening set.
