WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's and women's tennis teams open Mountain East Conference play on Friday with a trip to West Virginia State, as both programs begin league action in Institute, W.Va.
Men's Preview
The Hilltopper men enter Friday's matchup looking to reset as they begin conference competition. West Liberty is 1-6 overall this spring and currently riding a six-match losing streak following a challenging non-conference slate.
Despite recent struggles, the Hilltoppers have historically controlled the series, winning 10 of the last 11 meetings against the Yellow Jackets. However, West Virginia State earned a 7-0 victory in last year's matchup, providing added motivation for West Liberty heading into the MEC opener.
West Liberty's lone win came in the season opener against Penn State Behrend (5-2), while the Hilltoppers also dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Gordon during their spring break trip.
West Virginia State enters at 4-2 overall and has won two straight matches, bringing momentum into its home opener as both teams begin conference play.
Women's Preview
On the women's side, West Liberty enters with a 2-5 record and will look to carry momentum from earlier wins into MEC competition.
The Hilltoppers picked up victories over Daemen (6-1) and Albany State (5-2) this spring and have shown the ability to compete in tight matches throughout the season.
West Liberty has also had the upper hand recently in the series, winning the last two meetings against West Virginia State, including a 4-3 victory last season.
The Yellow Jackets enter Friday's match at 0-6 overall, still searching for their first win of the season after a difficult non-conference schedule.
