West Liberty, W.Va. - Hilltopper of the Week honors go to graduate student Pablo Zubieta following a strong opening weekend for the West Liberty University men's tennis team.
A native of Mexico City and graduate of Eton School México, Zubieta opened the spring season with a 3-1 overall record, playing a key role in the Hilltoppers' 1-1 start.
West Liberty kicked off the season with an impressive 5-2 win over Penn State Behrend at the Westwood Racquet Club, and Zubieta was instrumental in the victory.
He teamed with Chris Burns at No. 3 doubles to secure a decisive 6-2 win, helping the Hilltoppers claim the doubles point.
In singles, Zubieta delivered a commanding performance at No. 1, defeating Owen Sinnott 6-4, 6-1 to set the tone at the top of the lineup.
On the road against Daemen University, Zubieta again contributed in doubles, pairing with Burns for a 6-4 victory at No. 3 doubles — West Liberty's lone doubles win of the match.
Competing at No. 1 singles, Zubieta faced a tough challenge against Daemen's top player in a competitive match against strong regional competition.
From anchoring the top singles flight to helping secure key doubles points, Zubieta's leadership and consistency were vital in the Hilltoppers' opening weekend. His 3-1 record and impact performances make him a deserving Hilltopper of the Week.
